In 2025, Ducerf Groupe reaches a milestone: 140 years of existence
A rare longevity that speaks to the strength of this family-owned business specializing in hardwood processing. Since its inception, the company has evolved with the times while preserving its founding values. Today, the fifth generation is at the helm, represented by three cousins: Catherine, Jean-Marie, and Edouard Ducerf. Between heritage, transmission, and modernization, they are collectively paving the way for an ambitious future. Dive into the heart of a family adventure where passion and commitment are passed down from generation to generation.
An evolution driven by innovation and commitment
Since its establishment in 1885 with the opening of the Ducerf sawmill in Burgundy, the company has continuously adapted to market demands. In 1962, it stood out by creating the Les Bois Profilés site, later becoming a pioneer in producing finger-jointed oak scantlings for carpentry. Innovation continued with the launch of the PATCHWOOD® brand in 1984, expanding its offering to laminated panels, followed by PANOPLOT® solid wood panels in 1993. These years also marked the group’s expansion into export markets. In 2009, it entered the outdoor woodwork sector with the launch of the COTEPARC® range of cladding and decking solutions.
Over the years, the group has strengthened its production capacities through strategic acquisitions, including the sawmill of Biches and Lucot, as well as sites like SOBIC, Vénissieux, and La Roche-en-Brenil. The most recent acquisition, Bourgogne Bois Industrie in 2012, now specializes in the production of beech scantlings.
More recently, Ducerf has engaged in collective projects such as Bois Durables de Bourgogne and Bois Croisés de Bourgogne for manufacturing oak CLT panels. At the same time, the company continues its modernization efforts with significant industrial investments in 2024, including the overhaul of the debarking facility and the installation of a high-frequency press.
These developments have been accompanied by a strong commitment to quality and environmental responsibility. In 2002, Ducerf became the first French sawmill to be PEFC-certified before obtaining the FSC® label, highlighting its dedication to sustainable forest management. It later secured CTB-LCA certification and, in 2020, the Bois de France certification. The company also strengthened its CSR approach, aspiring to be labeled Great Place to Work in the future.
A new generation leading Ducerf Groupe
Although Catherine, Jean-Marie, and Edouard now lead Ducerf Groupe together, their career paths initially took them in different directions.
After a promising career in major market research institutes and commercial management in a large corporation, Catherine felt the need for a change. "Joining the family project made perfect sense when my daughters were born," she shares. She joined the company in 2020 as Marketing Director.
Jean-Marie, on the other hand, was an engine engineer in the World Rally Championship before turning to the family business. "New personal projects and the celebration of Ducerf’s 130th anniversary rekindled my deep connection to the company," he explains. He joined in 2018, gaining experience in primary processing before becoming Deputy Director, overseeing the group’s innovative and strategic projects, such as the cogeneration initiative.
Edouard always had a natural affinity for the company, though he had not initially planned to lead it. "I started as a management controller after an apprenticeship period, and my second mission was to take charge of the Bourgogne Bois Industrie production site," he recalls. In 2015, he became Deputy General Manager, then, in early 2020, succeeded Jacques Ducerf as CEO.
Pride and responsibility: Striking a balance
Taking the reins of a century-old family business is both an honor and a responsibility. "Being part of a 140-year-old family business is a privilege, but it also comes with pressure. Each generation must contribute to its legacy," they emphasize. Today, they continue this momentum by focusing on modernization and industrialization. "Seeing the company grow and knowing we are part of that success is truly rewarding," adds Catherine.
Ducerf Groupe's local roots remain a priority. "Our reputation in the wood industry is well established, and we are committed to maintaining it while supporting local development," says Edouard. This responsibility influences their strategic decisions daily.
They also recall challenging moments, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. "We had to ask all employees to go home without knowing what would happen next," they remember. This ordeal strengthened their resilience and adaptability.
Timeless values to guide the future
From one generation to the next, certain core values remain: a love for simplicity, strong local ties, humility, and care for employees. "We are not looking to grow at all costs but to remain a human-scale company, close to our teams," they explain.
This transmission is not just about words—it is also about experience. Catherine, Jean-Marie, and Edouard fondly recall moments spent in the forest with their elders, experiences that nurtured their passion for wood and deepened their commitment to the company.
Working as a family: An asset more than a challenge
While working with family can sometimes be challenging, the Ducerfs see it as a strength. "Our skills complement each other, and we work together in a healthy and straightforward way," they affirm. This was already true for the fourth generation—represented by Pierre, Yves, Gilles, and Jacques Ducerf—and the evolution of managerial and technological practices has enabled a smooth transition between generations. "The fourth generation trusts us and does not put undue pressure on us," Jean-Marie assures.
