French hardwood species
French forests are characterised by their diversity and richness, covering almost a third of the national territory. They are home to a majority of hardwood species, which account for around two-thirds of forest area. Hardwoods such as oak, beech, hornbeam and ash play a central role in the ecological and economic balance of forests. These hardwoods, with their varied and precious species, provide raw materials for the manufacture of wooden interior furniture, joinery, construction and energy, while at the same time promoting biodiversity. By capturing carbon and providing habitats for a wide variety of fauna, French hardwoods also help to combat climate change, while promoting a unique natural and cultural heritage.
