Solid Hardwood Staircases : Performance, Stability, and Technical Excellence

A staircase is a central structural element in any interior design project. It must withstand high mechanical stresses, guarantee perfect long-term stability, and offer impeccable aesthetic quality.

The DUCERF Group supports staircase manufacturers with a dedicated range of solid, laminated, and 3-ply hardwood panels, specifically designed for constructing wooden staircases (stringers or treads).

Why choose hardwood panels for staircase construction ?

Hardwood panels are the ideal solution for staircase construction thanks to their unique combination of strength and stability. They allow manufacturers to design reliable structural elements while offering high aesthetic appeal.

Their main advantages include :

  • Enhanced dimensional stability : reduced deformation due to humidity variations and mechanical stresses.
  • High mechanical resistance : suitable for treads, stringers, and risers subjected to daily use.
  • Optimal machinability : compatible with modern machining and finishing techniques (CNC, planing, sanding, staining).
  • Natural aesthetics : enhances design with a uniform grain and high-end finishes.

These characteristics make hardwood panels a preferred choice for technical, durable, and custom-made staircases, meeting the requirements of interior design and joinery professionals.

Which wood should you use for a staircase ?

For making stair treads, it is best to use a hard and resistant wood, as the treads are subject to heavy foot traffic and must withstand impacts and daily wear and tear. Oak is often considered the best choice: it is a very strong, durable, and attractive wood, suitable for both classic and modern staircases. Beech is also widely used because it is robust, relatively affordable, and has a light, slightly pinkish hue. Ash is another good option : it is hard, impact-resistant, and has a decorative grain. Regardless of the wood chosen, it is important to protect the steps with a varnish or sealant to increase their resistance to wear and tear and facilitate maintenance.
